Remote sensing of upper timberline elevation in the Alps on different scales
نویسنده
چکیده
Natural timberlines are remarkable indicators of climate conditions. Although potential shifts of climate-driven natural borderlines are discussed in the recent climate change debate, maps of natural timberline elevation in the European Alps are rare and not concordant. Problems are caused primarily by the strong human impact on timberline positions in the Alps. In this paper, approaches for detecting actual timberlines and approximating natural timberlines with remote sensing methods are presented. Using Landsat ETM and MODIS imagery, the difference in spatial resolution of the data led to different strategies. Results are encouraging, although numerous sources of error and uncertainty have to be considered. While the aim of this study is not to reach highest possible precision, investigation of large-scale spatial variability of natural timberline elevation in the Alps with remote sensing methods appears promising.

Changes in the timberline ecotone vegetation of Nanda Devi National Park (NDNP) was studied over a period of 30 years (1980–2010). Our study based on remote sensing analysis of Landsat MSS and TM images suggests no geographical shift in the upper limit of timberline, while the subalpine forest’s canopy has increased substantially. Decrease in heterogeneous reflectance pattern near upper boundar...

Human groups have considered the Behshahr plain of Mazandaran in the past Due to its particular geographical shape, location between the Caspian Sea and mountains, and the existence of some rivers in the region. However, our knowledge of this area is limited to several published surveys and archaeological investigation of its ancient sites. No detailed research has conducted on the formation of...

Traditional glaciological mass balance measurements of mountain glaciers are a demanding and cost intensive task. In this study, we combine data from the Ice Cloud and Elevation Satellite (ICESat) acquired between 2003 and 2009 with air and space borne Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) in order to derive surface elevation changes of the Grosser Aletschgletscher in the Swiss Alps. Three different ...
